I was always telling my son that his height should not define him, or hold him back from achieving his dreams.
I’ve heard him being called names, people think he is unable to do things other children of the same age can do, and people not talking to him in an age-appropriate way, all due to his height. As a parent it’s heart breaking but I’ve always told him that his height should not hold him back from anything.
I’ve always enjoyed reading with my boys, and for us, a big part is looking at the pictures, trying to match the words with the images. I really think the pictures in this storybook Your Height, My Height tell the story perfectly, that whatever your size you can achieve.
This storybook addresses that whether your small, tall or in-between, it shouldn’t hold you back – you can play with your friends, you can all achieve, you can all be nice to each other, and you can be friends together. I want this book to empower all children, whatever their height.
The storybook has beautiful illustrations. Illustrator Alice Peroni (part of Bear With Us) was wonderful to work with and her drawing are full of lovely detail that you can enjoy with your child. There is so much to discuss to each picture, not just the words.
At the back of the book there is space children to add their height and write how their height makes them feel.
I loved working on the storybook, and if it helps just one child, then it has all been worthwhile. Your Height, My Height is available through our online shop at childgrowthfoundation.org/yhmh.
